So very much to be thankful for! I absolutely adore this group of children - AM & PM! We are having such a good time together! I am quite pleased that we have been able to stay in person for this long! Be sure to see the pictures at the end.
Here are some curricular updates to bring you up to speed:
Math - We have entered our third unit in math and are working with multiplication and division. Some letters have recently been sent home explaining the unit, as well as requesting home support on practicing times tables to build fact fluency. This is our introductory unit to multiplication as we explore the function through groupings to build foundational understanding, especially as we connect the operation to story problems. This unit will also help to build the reciprocal function of division.
Reading - Book Fair theme week was also a blast! I loved seeing the kids making fun connections to favorite stories. Currently, we are at the very end of our reading unit "Building a Reading Life". We have been focusing on strategies to help us to strengthen our reading skills. We are working on reading with grit, tackling hard words and building deeper contextual understanding. Our next unit will be focused on non-fiction, so these skills will be very useful and transferrable. This is from Jessica Schaeffer, our Language Arts Facilitator. Writing - We are also turning the corner on our writing unit. We have been focused on writing true stories in the narrative format. We have shifted from generating ideas into choosingone story to grow into a longer draft. We are working on showing the story to our audience - use of dialogue, imagery and details. We look forward to finishing these stories soon and having a writer's celebration by sharing them with the class.
SS - As we continue to focus on the fundamental needs, we have also been studying the natural environment and climate of the United States. We have built a physical, environmental map to bring greater understanding to the different climates and regions of the land. This has helped to set the groundwork for us to move into a deeper understanding of the Native Americans and how they lived and depended on the land.
Science - We continue our explorations of water - building our knowledge of cohesion and surface tension led us to explore water in nature as we experimented with different surfaces to determine waterproof, absorption and water repellent. Thankfully we were able to get outdoors for this experiment - it was great to have some warm days this late in the fall. Next, we will review the water cycle and shift into weather and climate.
Here are a few pictures for you to enjoy from this month:
